Hazel Bank was buit in
1840's by a wealthy businessman on his return
from America to the the valley of his forebears
and relatives. This was to be Thomas Simpson's
dream home incorporating interesting architectural
features of the Victorian neo-gothic revival period
from both sides of the Atlantic ocean. Fortunately
the house has retained many such charming features
but has been sympathetically refurbished to provide
guests with modern day comforts. Set in four acres
of lawns and woodland gardens some 200 yards away
from the road. Hazel Bank overlooks Rosthwaite
village with commanding views across Borrowdale,
probably the loveliest of all the Lakeland valleys,
and beyond to Great Gable.
For the serious walker
there is immediate access directly from the grounds
to many well known peaks such as Great Gable,
Dalehead, Robinson, Haystacks, Scafell, Glaramara,
Lingmell, Great End, Grange Fell and Catbells.
For those easier days there are pleasant walks
along the River Derwent through the Jaws of Borrowdale
to Derwentwater, up the Langstrath or over to
Watendlath.
