Introduction
Brenda and Glen
Davies, the proud owners and managers of Hazel
Bank, invite you to browse through their website
in the hope that
one day they will have the opportunity and pleasure
of welcoming you to their home.
Hazel Bank
stands in 4 acres of garden and woodland in an
elevated position overlooking the village of Rosthwaite
with unsurpassed views of the Borrowdale valley
and the central lakeland peaks.
This imposing early Victorian
residence was built in 1840 by a wealthy banker,
Thomas Simpson, on his return from America to
the valley of his forebears. Hazel Bank was to
be the dream home for the Simpson family. Access
is up its own private driveway over a humpbacked
bridge - Simpson Bridge - where Hazel Bank stands
proudly above the valley floor some 200 yards
away from the main Borrowdale road. Its situation
provides a tranquil and peaceful location for
walkers and tourists alike.
Sir Hugh Walpole, the
famous novelist, lived nearby in Grange - In -
Borrowdale and was a friend to the Simpson family
and as such was a frequent visitor to Hazel Bank.
It is not surprising that he used this setting
in his "Herries Chronicles" as the home
of the Rogue Herries and the birthplace of Judith
Paris, referring to it as "the house with
the dormers like eyebrows".
Hazel Bank
has been receiving guests for over 60 years and
the present owners Brenda and Glen Davies have
been sympathetically restoring the house over
the past few years. It now provides quality and
well proportioned ensuite bedrooms with four posters,
executive doubles, standard doubles and twin bedded
options. All the rooms have spectacular fell and
woodland views and are equipped and furnished
to the highest standards to be expected of a comfortable
country house. The award winning dining room offers
superb dinners prepared from fresh local produce
with homemade sauces and puddings accompanied
by an agreeable selection of wines. To start the
day there is a selection of juices, fruits and
cereals followed by a wholesome traditional English
breakfast. Vegetarian alternatives are provided
by prior arrangement.
For the serious walker
there is immediate access directly from the grounds
to many well known peaks such as Great Gable,
Dalehead, Robinson, Haystacks, Scafell, Glaramara,
Lingmell, Great End, Grange Fell and Catbells.
For those easier days there are pleasant walks
along River Derwent through the Jaws of Borrowdale
via Castle Crag to Derwentwater, along the Langstrath
or over to Watendlath.
Hazel
Bank is strictly non-smoking
